Guided tour Vigevano

With 60.000 inhabitants, Vigevano is the second biggest town in the Province of Pavia and it situated not far from the river Ticino.

Famous for the shoe industries and for the wonderful Piazza Ducale (it is said to be one of the most beautiful squares in Italy), Vigevano rose during the Middle Ages and Renaissance around the huge Castello Visconteo-Sforzesco. If you take a look at the city map, you’ll notice that the streets form circles around the castle: this is the typical structure of medieval towns.

After the big staircase starting from the square, the castle welcomes you with its vast courtyard. The horse stables, with their stunning colonnades and harmonic proportions, are a representative example of 15th-century architecture, when the town became one of the favorite leisure places for the Duke of Milan Ludovico il Moro and his young wife Beatrice d’Este.

The covered street (strada coperta), composed of two levels, brings us back to the middle of the 14th century, when the first parts of the castle were commissioned by Luchino Visconti.

WHAT YOU’LL SEE DURING THE GUIDED TOUR IN VIGEVANO: The Piazza Ducale, the Cathedral and the Visconteo-Sforzesco castle, with the horse stables, the covered street, the ladies loggia (external), the internal yard and the old fortress.

If you prefer to spend the whole day in Vigevano, I also suggest a visit to the Mulino di Mora Bassa, an ancient mill situated in the suburns of Vigevano, where a permanent collection of wooden models of Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions is hosted.
